High Lakes Trail 01.21.12

Thirteen intrepid skiers from the two Rogue Valley Nordic Clubs skied eight miles from Lake of the Woods to Fish Lake. Though it had rained the previous day, temperatures had dropped and they were greeted by 3-5 inches of new powder. It was lightly snowing throughout much of the tour, but the group made great time and got to Fish Lake Resort in the early afternoon. They were warmly greeted at the restaurant (open weekends) and enjoyed the warmth, food and camaraderie.

A baker's dozen skiers from the Valley of the Rogue in Southern Oregon enjoyed spectacular views on the West Rim Drive at Crater Lake. The 3-4 inches of new powder was crisp at 10:30 AM with 18 degrees and stayed dry throughout the day. Bright clear skies gave us wide vistas and except for a few windblown icy patches in the gaps, the snow was great. The meadows below the rim road provided an excellent place for some downhill turning practice. Wizard Island peeks out in the background of this group at the Watchman Overlook.

Twelve skiers from the Rogue Valley took advantage of last night's snowfall in the Cascades to ski Billie Creek. The camaraderie and conversation were great as we headed up the east side of Billie Creek and later down the west side. A variety of weather and snow conditions greeted our group. We encountered slightly heavy snow to start and lighter powder as we climbed. Skies varied from a bit of blue to cloudy and dark with heavy snow starting at the lunch stop for about half an hour in the middle of the tour and graupel near the end. Trail breaking was easy and the run downhill was fast and roly poly due to the melting of the past week.

What a fine late winter day on Mt Ashland. We climbed up a ridge overlooking Grouse Gap then traversed down into the Gap and toured the Grouse Gap Loop. As you can see, the views were spectacular. The snow was soft on the sunny slopes and quick on the shady parts of the trail.

Volcano Express, Burton Butte 02.26.11

Smiles were in abundance as 35 skiers from the GPNSC and SONC toured the Volcano Express around Burton Butte. Thanks to intrepid trail-breaking by an early arriving SONC crew and GPS skills of our SONC tour leader, all the skiers enjoyed a wonderful outing. The snow conditions were excellent with the foot of new powder making the downhill run through the trees maneuverable and fun for all. About 3/4 of the skiers went up to the meadow near the top of Burton Butte and had a sunny lunch with views of Mt Shasta, Mountain Lakes Wilderness and Buck Lake.

McLoughlin Trail 02.23.11

Ten skiers from the SONC and GPNSC skied the McLoughlin Trail in excellent conditions. With a firm base and 6 inches of new snow the crew had a great time heading up the Canal Trail and then down McLoughlin through the old growth. A highlight of the tour occurred on the McLoughlin Trail about halfway to the Summit Shelter. In the midst of chatting about seeing wildlife in the backcountry and remarking on the profusion of fresh rabbit tracks, we saw two rabbits: a big one and a little one.

Then we spied a weasel chasing the smaller rabbit round and round, The big rabbit tried to lead the weasel away, but the chase continued even as we reluctantly decided to ski on. What a true life adventure. Next, we were happily greeted at the shelter by Ranger Paul, who had already warmed the place up with a fire in the wood stove. What a lucky day!

Lollipop Loop 02.16.11

Seventeen skiers from the Rogue and Illinois Valleys took advantage of the lowered snow levels and recent snowfall to spend an enjoyable day at Fish Lake skiing the Lollipop Loop. The eight inches of new snow provided many of the crew turns at trail-breaking. Light flurries, some blue sky and occasional outbreaks of sun added to the nordic magic.

What a great spring ski day up at Pederson Sno-Park. Ten skiers showed up to take advantage of the corn snow and gentle rolling terrain on the south side of Pederson. The more open tree plantations, wider trails and corn snow provided a quick glide. Icy conditions were avoided early in the day by staying in the sunny areas. Most of the crew skied about 8 miles in the Burton Flats area for an enjoyable day in the Cascades under bright blue skies.

Cold temperatures and new powder greeted two groups of skiers from GPNSC and SONC as they skied the West Billie Creek Trail on New Year's Day. Thanks to some heroic trail-breaking on New Year's Eve from a cohort of 5 skiers, some of whom spent the weekend at the Lake of the Woods Resort, there was only about 3-4 inches of new powder for the larger group who started from the LOW Marina to get through as they skied up West Billie Creek. Another group parked at the Fourmile punch-out and went up the Fourmile Lake Road and then down West Billie. Great glide and good control made for a fine ski, but the fresh snow depth made it necessary to stay in the track. What a wonderful way to start the new year. If you've not skied the trail system north of Hwy140 from the Summit and Fourmile Sno-parks you owe yourself the treat!

Pederson to Deadwood Ski 12.22.10

Like someone said, the best ski ever... is the one you're on. Thirteen intrepid skiers from GPNSC and SONC drove up to Pederson Sno-Park and started out on the west side of Glasgow Loop. They then skied westward gently downhill through old growth, climbed across plantations, skied down along logging roads and beside an irrigation canal through 6 inches of heavy snow. Everyone had many chances to break trail and enjoy the glide of a firm track.The weather goddess cooperated: mild temperature, no precipitation, mixed skies of dark and light clouds, a bit of blue sky and some sun during lunch.

Christmas Party and Ski 12.18.10

Over 30 people from GPNSC and SONC showed up for skiing and a party at the Lake of the Woods. About 19 skiers skied a tour from the Marina through the cabins and Aspen Point Campground down to the junction with the Fourmile Lake Road. After carefully crossing Hwy 140, the group headed up the road on 3 inches of new snow and took a right for the Billie Creek trail. Taking the west side, we climbed through a few miles of woods including some nice old growth before heading back down on a fast glide through the woods. We were really moving, as fast as you wanted. A thank you goes out to one of Santa's elves who brought along a saw and trimmed a few snow-bent trees to make the downhill run safer and more fun.

Back at LOW there were ski lessons for beginners and a short tour enjoyed by over 10 skiers The party was great with pizza, hors d'oeuvres, snacks and treats galore. The traditional "ski-related white elephant" gift exchange was uproarious and even included a real white elephant ... on skis! Thank you to all who participated, volunteer leaders, set up crew and to the LOW Resort staff for the venue and decorations.

Mt Ashland Ski 12.08.10

Arriving at the Mt Ashland Lodge before the road was plowed, the group elected to ski from there. As the weather service predicted, it was blustery and snowing hard with whiteout conditions. After turning around about 2 miles from the Lodge, a brief break in the whiteout allowed this photo of the skiers on the back side of Mt Ashland. With the wind a blowin' at their backs, the skiers had a beautiful glide back down to the parking area. As the temperature had warmed a bit and it was sleeting, we then headed back to Ashland for coffee and conversation at the Apple Cellar. It was sure fun to get out.

Page Mountain Ski 12.01.10

Four skiers braved the rain on Wednesday, Dec. 1 to enjoy a nature-filled ski day at Page Mt. snowpark. We saw a juvenile bald eagle sitting in the top of a snag on the drive up. We skied to the top of the mountain, following bear tracks most of the way. At a trail juncture the bear went left and we went on up to the top. On the way down we decided to track the bear further and followed its tracks for another half mile or so until they went over a steep embankment. We left it to our imagination that the bear was holed up down there. We also saw some type of cat tracks (bobcat perhaps) and lots a rabbit tracks. Even though it rained on us most of the day the snow was still decent and we had a great time.

These skiers are 1/4 of the two dozen skiers from the Grants Pass and Southern Oregon Nordic Clubs whose smiles are testament to the wonderful early snow conditions in the Southern Oregon Cascades. Following a lunch stop at the Summit Shelter, the group divided into two crews: one returned on the Big Mac Trail as we had come up, the other crew headed north up the McLoughlin Trail for a loop of another couple of miles. Eight skiers from the Grants Pass and Southern Oregon Nordic Ski Clubs broke trail through 20 inches of fresh powder up the Fourmile Lake Road and Big Mac trail to the Summit Shelter. Cold temps, blue skies, a few snow flurries and great conversation made for a wonderful day on the snow. We didn't spot any turkeys, but saw elk and rabbit tracks galore.

Page Mountain 11.13.10

Seven GPNSC members did some needed trail maintenance on Page Mountain yesterday. Working for more than three hours, they got 'er done before some rain set in. The crew cleared brush on a link between two roads and put up some blue diamonds to mark the way to the top of the mount. Now, we are awaiting the first big snow.

Nine skiers from the Grants Pass Nordic Ski Club and the Southern Oregon Nordic Club toured from the Ichabod Quarry punch-out up to the quarry, down through the woods and on out a snow-mobile road to Brown Mountain Shelter for a sunny lunch. Mild temperatures, a firm base and a soft top inch made for great spring conditions. On the way up the mountain the group enjoyed multiple runs down a 5 acre playhill called Manzanita Meadows by some. Nary a raindrop hit the skiers heads until they were getting back in their vehicles; who could ask for a better day.

Thirteen of the more than 2 dozen skiers from the Southern Oregon Nordic Club and the Grants Pass Nordic Ski Club who participated in the the annual Formal Ski. Making their way through 10 inches of dense powder with snow flurries about one half the way, the troop skied out to the Grouse Gap Shelter for a party with excellent high class hors d'ouvres, bubbly and great conversation. As the mountain was filled with down-hillers on the backside as well, the group got numerous nice comments on their outfits and many questions such as "Is it a wedding?."

This past Saturday, nineteen skiers from the Grants Pass Nordic Ski Club and the Southern Oregon Nordic Club shared trail-breaking through 12 inches of dense powder on the McLoughlin Trail in the Southern Oregon Cascades. The skiers broke into three groups on the climb up to the Shelter. After a lunch stop and having earned their turns, they gloriously skied down the broken McLoughlin trail through deep old growth forest with great glide and good control.

Lake of the Woods Weekend 02.26-28.10

The weekend opened with a tasty pizza dinner get together on Friday evening at the Lake of the Woods Resort. On Saturday, 28 skiers and guests of the Grants Pass Nordic Ski Club and the Southern Oregon Nordic Club enjoyed gorgeous weather and 1 inch of fresh new snow as they skied up to Ichabod Rock Pit off Dead Indian Memorial Road. The views were spectacular of Mt Shasta, Buck Lake, Brown Mountain, Mt McLoughlin and Pelican Butte. After a fun downhill play session on a five acre open slope, the group climbed to the pit, had lunch at the crest, then proceeded down through the woods on a technical ski to the Brown Mountain snowmobile road. The quick easy run back back to the sno-park was exhilarating. Another group of skiers practiced skate skiing on the roads near the lake.

The Saturday skis were followed by a big pot luck dinner at the Lake of the Woods Resort. A Full Moon moonlight ski across the Great Meadow on Highway 140 capped off the day's activities. While the snow was crunchy by our start at 8:30, no light was needed in the moonlight on the meadow. Clear skies also gave good views of the stars. Mt McLoughlin shone in the moonlight like a giant sugarloaf.

On Sunday, smaller groups of skiers returned to the Ichabod play hill or skied around the edge of the lake. A number of skiers talked about making this an annual event.

High Lakes Ski 02.06.10

Twenty skiers braved the High Lakes Trail from the Great Meadow to Fish Lake along the snow-covered bike path. About 5 others snow-shoed at Fish Lake or took an alternate ski near Lake of the Woods. Snowing, socked-in conditions crossing the Great Meadow gave way to a mix of clouds, a few flurries and some sunshine at the lunch stop with spring snow conditions. The group wound their way through deep forest, across lava fields and down some exciting hills. The last mile and a half was rather trashy with a lot of downfall and sparse snow covering which required many to remove their skis multiple times. As usual a bit of an apre`s ski party atmosphere ensued at the Fish Lake Resort. What a great work out; a day of real Southern Oregon Cascades back-country skiing!

Eighteen backcountry skiers from the Southern Oregon and Grants Pass Nordic Clubs met at the Fourmile Lake Sno-Park on Highway 140 and skied up the west side of Billie Creek. The skies were clear, the 4-6 inches of new snow powdery and the deep woods was a veritable winter wonderland. After a lunch stop at the snowmobile road, the group divided into two. Some returned via the wide road and others took advantage of the broken trail and skied back through the woods the way they came. Everyone enjoyed a great pre-Christmas ski in the Cascades.

Two long-time members of the GPNSC hosted a fun get together and potluck at their home in the hills of Southern Oregon. Members of both the Grants Pass and Southern Oregon Nordic Clubs attended. The food and fellowship were great, stories were swapped and a number of folks hiked along the creek while others relaxed on the porch. Some members could be overheard wondering what kind of snow season is in store for us.

Trail Work Party, 06.20.09

After consultation with the Forest Service, a trail work day was organized for the trails in the area around Mt. McLoughlin. A baker's dozen showed up to get the work done and enjoy a beautiful day in the mountains.

After a short orientation meeting at the Summit Sno-Park, the group divided into 3 or 4 work parties. We cleared the upper McLoughlin Trail, Billie Creek and Lollipop. We were sure happy to have 3 certified sawyers with chain saws; especially, as West Billie had a number of huge logs to clear. Meeting for lunch at the bottom of Billie Creek we were graced by a lengthy visit from a male Western Tanager.

The work went smoothly and safely and the group assembled at the Fish Lake Resort for food and fellowship afterward. In spite of the Father's Day Fishing Tournament, there was plenty of room for our crew. Our hostess Debbie stated that she was happy to see our cross country ski group in the summer.

High Lakes Ski 02.21.09

Pictured above are three of 10 skiers who skied a nine mile run from the Great Meadow, generally following the High Lakes bike trail, up and down to Fish Lake. Two additional skiers helped shuttle cars and stuck to the gentler terrain around the two lakes. In this photo you can see dark clouds to the west of Mt McLoughlin potentially indicating a coming change in the weather. Mild temperatures and partly cloudy skies accompanied the skiers as they passed by Boy Scouts practicing first aid and sled rescues between Lake of the Woods and the McLoughlin Scout Camp. After the ski, the group enjoyed curly fries and drinks at the always friendly Fish Lake Resort.

GPNSC skiers gather after a 6 mile ski from Summit Sno-Park up Canal and Big Mac trails to the Summit Shelter. After a snack in the sun, the troop headed down Petunia and Pitt View trails to the Powerline trail. They enjoyed playing on the hills along the way and everyone appreciated the mild weather, great snow conditions and chance to be skiing in the Cascades.

Brown Mountain Exploratory 02.14.09

Pictured above are about half of the 27 skiers who completed the Brown Mountain ski. Starting at a punchout off Dead Indian Memorial Road south of Lake of the Woods, the group climbed on a National Forest road through beautiful snow-covered forests taking turns breaking trail in 12 inches of powder. The new snow made for a slower pace and plenty of time to chat.

Following the couple mile climb, they joined a trail groomed by snowmobilers and glided gently down toward Hwy 140, then took a left on the High Lakes Trail, skiing around lava flows and through some old growth. After hitting a snowmobile road, the hardy band headed west along 140 back to Summit Sno-park, getting some good views of Brown Mountain. The total ski was about 9 miles and even the newer skiers exhibited their stamina and fortitude up and down some steep hills and in the final half mile slog along the noisy road.

Silent Creek Ski, 02.07.09

Seven of sixteen GPNSC skiers near the shore of Diamond Lake in the Oregon Cascades. Mount Thielsen, looking like some otherwordly stronghold from the Lord of the Rings, is in the background. They skied down one side and up the other of Silent Creek, a quiet, meandering stream filled with bright pebbles that sparkle like gems in the sun. The clear skies and mild temperatures made for a wonderful outing on the six mile ski tour.

The Chili Run Ice Capades 01.31.09

Icy and fast, but fun was the verdict from the 12 skiers who attended the Chili Run. Blue skies and temps in the 20's and 30's made for some good views and pleasant weather. Three skiers skied into the shelter early to get the fire going and start the chili. As each skier arrived at the shelter, they added their can of chili to the pot. Then all enjoyed the hot lunch before heading down the icy snowmobile road. Snowplowing was possible, but a few skiers elected to walk down "Suicide Hill".

Mt Ashland 01.28.09

It was an icy day on the mountain, but undeterred, these skiers from GPNSC and SONC climbed up the groomed access road to the top of Mt Ashland. Another group practiced technique on the lower portion of the road. Skies were clear, the sun was warm and the views were spectacular.

The peak was windy and cold, so after taking a few snapshots, they slid down to a protected south side spot for lunch. The ride down was exhilarating and the freshly groomed road provided all the speed you wanted, but enough good grip and control for turns so you could maintain a safe speed.

Starting at 11:15 AM was a good call for these skiers who went up Burton Butte in the southern Oregon Cascades. The weather was mild and the snow pack softened up in the open areas and on the forest roads. The photographer really got these 5 to laugh.

While the valleys were shrouded in fog, these southern Oregon skiers headed to the mountains for their doses of Vitamin D. This picture was taken on the Pitt View Trail. Mt McLoughlin, in the background, was formally known as Mt Pitt. While there were some icy areas directly under big trees, these were easily avoided by going off trail. All the snow in areas with about 12 feet of space between trees was great, an inch of granular snow over a firm base. They skied to the Summit Shelter and then skied down Pitt View to the Lower Petunia Trail. What fun.

This happy new GPNSC skier was caught enjoying a sunny day at about 5500 feet in the Southern Oregon Cascades. With a group of about 20, she was on her way back on a tour of about eight miles. While the day started out with temps in the high teens and an inch of new snow, by 2 PM, when this picture was taken, it was in the mid forties, but the glide back was great.

Two of the thirteen skiers from the Grants Pass and Southern Oregon Nordic Clubs who enjoyed a ski to the Summit Shelter on Christmas Day. A break in the weather and some brief sunshine made taking turns breaking trail easier as they wound their way up to this shelter from the Canal and Pitt View trails. It was a bit hard to leave the warm fire and head back, but the glide was worth it. Most of the group joined up later for a chili party at a SONC member's home.

Fish Lake Ski

Santa's Elf calls numbers for a white elephant gift exchange.

More than 45 backcountry skiers from southern Oregon gathered at Fish Lake to ski the Lollipop Loop and have a Christmas Party in the shelter built in 1936 by the CCC. With 18 inches of snow to break trail through, the group divided into two after skiing the stem of the Lollipop, met at the top of the sucker and passed each other. Everyone had a great ride down the trail groomed by the other group. New skiers had fun taking lessons closer to the shelter.

First Ski of the Season

Five back country skiers from the Rogue Valley took advantage of a break between snow storms and enjoyed a marvelous ski tour up the Canal trail from Summit Sno-Park on Highway 140. Following a trail broken the day before, we skied through the sparkling forest noticing the many animal tracks, including those of a small herd of elk that had recently followed the trail for a bit. We found a sunny lunch stop in the open area at the junction of Fourmile Lake and Canal Roads. The temperature never got above the low 20's, so after skiing further up the Fourmile Lake Road we turned around and had a wonderful glide back.

Fall Color

Butte Falls, Jackson County Oregon

As we eat the wonderfully ripe tomatoes, rake leaves and hike in the fall colors, we are all day-dreaming about the snow flying. It won't be long. At least one long range weather forecast calls for the early part of the winter to be a bit colder and snowier than usual from just after Thanksgiving to around the middle of January. With the extraordinary amount of snow this year, the few trail markings soon vanished, but pressing on, the enthusiastic group enjoyed a fine exploratory ski as they headed west across numerous lava beds down toward Fish Lake. After hitting the snowmobile trail they skied on to the Fish Lake Resort where they enjoyed the refreshments and camaraderie.

Pictured above are seven of 10 happy skiers from the Grants Pass and Southern Oregon Nordic Clubs who enjoyed a wonderful ski down the South Rye trail from Summit Sno-Park to Fish Lake. While the new and accumulating snow was rather heavy and soft, the glide was excellent as this well laid-out trail took us through beautiful old growth forest with many quick runs and a few sharp turns.

The snow was crusty, but the skies were clear for this Saturday ski into Summit Shelter. The skiers took a route up Canal to Pitt View and on up Petunia to the shelter. While it was possible to climb down into the shelter, many chose to eat lunch in the beautiful sunshine with a nice view of Mt McLoughlin. The ride back was definitely fast with better control found out of the track on the firm sun-warmed snow.

With 20 inches of new snow in the Southern Oregon Cascades, it was difficult finding a place to park for a ski. These skiers from GPNSC and SONC broke trail for for a few hours before some snowmobilers came by and cut a path up the road from Great Meadow to Fourmile Lake Road. Five of the 15 skiers that skied from the Mt Bachelor Nordic Center east on the Flagline Trail to Swampy Sno-Park. The Flagline skiers were part of a group of more than two dozen skiers who spent a long weekend in 3 houses at Sunriver. Many of the group skied downhill at Mt Bachelor on Thursday and toured the backcountry on Friday and Saturday. Weather and snow conditions were excellent and the camaraderie was enjoyed by all.

These fun folk from GPNSC and SONC took a Christmas ski through 4 inches of new powder along Silent Creek up and down to Diamond Lake. After returning to the vehicles, the crew rode to Diamond Lake Resort for a Christmas Dinner Buffet. As you can see above, it was a wonderful day.

This photo was taken by Stefanie Ferrara, president of our sister club SONC who joined us along with two of her other club members. 23 skiers in all made the tour on this lovely ski through the Southern Oregon Cascades which heads North off Route 140 and up the east side of Billie Creek. After meeting the Canal Road and skiing west for a bit, skiers head down along the west side of the creek through beautiful large Douglas Firs in a winter wonderland.

First Ski of the Season 12.01.07

Pictured above are 6 of 14 happy skiers that ventured out to Crater Lake today for the first ski of the season. The temperature was 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Following an hour of sunshine with great views of the lake, they skied down to the lodge to play on the meadows. Breaking trail through 14 inches of fresh dry snow, the group skied for another couple of miles through meadows and woods before heading back to the cafe for lunch.

After checking out the observation and meeting room on the second floor, this hearty group headed out on the west rim drive to Discovery Point where thankfully the trail was broken. As the wind picked up in the afternoon, everyone was ready to head back. What a great day to be out in our spectacular backcountry.

Chetco River 08.10.07 - 08.12.07

Pictured above are four of eight members of the GPNSC who spent a pleasant, windy weekend on the Chetco River. After leaving our vehicles at the end of a Siskiyou National Forest road, we waded across the river and hiked in about 2 miles. We traveled first through mixed deciduous and conifer forest; the last mile of primeval, fern-covered hillsides led to a beautiful campsite with a sandy beach right on the river near a rushing waterfall. The clear water made for great swimming among the newts.

Following a short hike to the next creek up river, a crew took Thermarest pads and swam, walked and floated back down to the campsite. Companionable chatter around the campfire and an early bedtime prepared the adventurous little band for a float and paddle down the Chetco River to Nook Bar on Sunday. Sadly, cloud cover greeted the couple who arose in the middle of the night to check on the Perseid Meteor Shower.

Sunday, six of us floated downriver past the Chetco Inn, through the forest accompanying a great blue heron for a spell. The weather was excellent, but the wind was strong in the wider river areas and consequently the tribe was really hungry for fish and chips at the Chetco Seafood Company after the 3.5 hour paddle.

Wagner Butte Hike 06.16.07

16 members of the GPNSC and the Southern Oregon Nordic Club hiked up Wagner Butte on a beautiful, cool spring day. Leaving the trail head about 9:45, the group climbed through varied terrain including second growth forest with a number of old growth fir and Ponderosa pine, small meadows, a large grassed-over landslide, sagebrush meadows with numerous wild flowers, an aspen glade and a finally a rocky promontory to reach the summit for lunch. They were treated to great views of the Rogue Valley and Ashland area. The companionship was pleasant, the weather fine and boy was it quicker coming downhill!

A pleasant spring day was perfect for a hike in the Butte Falls area on the homestead of a couple of our club members. Camas lilies were in bloom along with many other wildflowers. Following the hike, the rushing waters of Big Butte Creek provided a gentle background for the conversation and camaraderie at the pot luck. Kudos were given to our hosts and officers by our president, Janice Ebel and a number of awards were given out.

Seven of ten GPNSC members who skied out toward the Watchman, playing on the hills along the way. Following a lunch stop, this group headed down the Lightning Springs trail a ways to practice turns in the soft snow. What a crystal clear day with great views. Morning presented dry, wintery conditions which turned to spring snow as the temperature warmed. We passed at least two groups who were snow camping and circuiting the lake.

These happy members of the GPNSC and the Southern Oregon Nordic Club were a few of about 2 dozen skiers who participated in a Formal Ski at Mt Ashland. Great Spring conditions made for smooth glides and mostly sunny skies provided excellent vistas. The party at Grouse Gap Shelter included great conversation and a wonderful spread of hors d'oeuvres. Toasts could be heard to the weather, the snow, the beautiful mountains and our great good fortune.

On St. Patrick's Day, under clear skies with temperatures in the 60's, Murf Karns (in yellow) led the group (half of whom are shown here) on a wonderful run up the Pacific Crest Trail to a beautiful meadow with great views of Union Peak. After lunch the downhill runs through the trees were spectacular; ask anyone who went.

Minnehaha Creek 02.24.07

Four of 15 participants on an exploratory ski tour in the Rogue River National Forest. The tour by-passed Hamaker Campground, crossed the Rogue River and then followed the Minnehaha bike trail along the north side of the creek. Skiers passed by marshes, broke trail up a ravine through old growth forest and enjoyed great views of the creek before a fast ski back down and a party at the Claude Lewis Shelter on Highway 230.

Buck Prairie

Bruce Evatt and Joan Finney led a wonderful backcountry ski from Buck Prairie to Hyatt Lake on February 17, 2007. Sunny skies, spring snow and excellent views of Mt McLoughlin, Mt Ashland and Mt Shasta greeted the 13 skiers. After connecting with the snowmobile road, the group left the marked trail to explore and enjoy numerous downhill runs as they wound their way down to Hyatt Lake Resort for food and refreshment.

Yellowstone Ski Trip

Ten members of the GPNSC went backcountry skiing in Yellowstone National Park at the end of January with Yellowstone Expeditions. The skiing was great, the weather was fine (only one night of 18 degrees below zero) and the wildlife viewing was exceptional. Thanks to our guides, we had many close up opportunities to see bison, elk, foxes, coyotes, eagles, swans, geese and other waterfowl. Skiing along the rim of Yellowstone Canyon provided great vistas. A four mile ski to Violet Creek one day gave us an opportunity to warm up in a geo-thermal creek heated by Mother Earth to about 110 degrees.

A few members and a prospective new member enjoy the sun near Summit Shelter after a crusty ski up Canal trail and down Mt McLoughlin trail. Over 20 skiers crunched through the snow on the tour today under clear blue skies. The icy crust made for challenging conditions. Definitely not for the faint of heart.
